Barbara Windsor’s Heartfelt Apology to Husband Scott Mitchell After Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Dame Barbara Windsor, best known for her role as Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders, shared a heartbreaking moment with her husband, Scott Mitchell, upon learning she had Alzheimer’s.
This emotional revelation was discussed on the February 20 episode of Loose Women, where panelist Jane Moore,
a close friend of Barbara’s, reflected on the late actress’s response to her diagnosis.

Barbara’s Emotional Reaction to Her Diagnosis

Barbara Windsor was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014, though she and Scott kept the news private for several years before making it public in 2018.

As the illness progressed, she moved into a care home in August 2020, where she spent the final months of her life before passing away in December of that year at the age of 83.
During Loose Women, Jane Moore recalled how, upon receiving her diagnosis, Barbara immediately turned to Scott and, with deep sorrow, told him, “I’m so sorry.”
Jane, holding fellow panelist Nadia Sawalha’s wrist as she shared the story, emphasized how much Barbara understood the difficult journey ahead, not just for herself but for her devoted husband.
“She knew what was coming for Scott because she was very much still aware at the time of what Alzheimer’s meant,” Jane explained. “She didn’t think about herself; she thought about him. She knew it was going to be a very difficult path for him.”
Scott’s Dedication to Barbara’s Care
Scott Mitchell, who married Barbara in 2000, became her primary caregiver as she battled the disease. Jane Moore praised his unwavering commitment, noting how he made extensive adaptations to their home to accommodate Barbara’s needs.
Throughout her illness, Scott continued to be by her side, advocating for better awareness and support for families affected by Alzheimer’s.
His devotion to Barbara extended beyond her passing, as he became deeply involved in fundraising and charitable efforts in her memory.

Raising Awareness and Funds for Alzheimer’s Research
Less than a year after Barbara’s death, Scott participated in the London Marathon in October 2021, running in honor of his late wife.
Wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with her image, he raised more than £160,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK. His dedication to raising awareness led to him becoming an official ambassador for the charity in August 2021.
This wasn’t the first time Scott had taken on such a challenge. In 2019, while Barbara was still alive, he and several EastEnders actors ran the marathon together to support Alzheimer’s research.
His ongoing advocacy ensures that Barbara’s legacy continues to shine a light on the struggles faced by those with the disease and their loved ones.
Barbara Windsor’s Legacy
Barbara Windsor was a beloved actress whose career spanned decades, from her early days in the Carry On films to her unforgettable role as Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders. Beyond her on-screen work, she was known for her warmth, humor, and larger-than-life personality.
Her battle with Alzheimer’s was a deeply personal struggle, but her and Scott’s decision to go public with the diagnosis helped break down stigma surrounding the disease.
By sharing their journey, they raised awareness about the challenges faced by individuals and caregivers, inspiring many to support dementia-related causes.

Barbara Windsor’s apology to Scott Mitchell upon learning of her Alzheimer’s diagnosis was a poignant reflection of her selflessness and deep love for her husband. Even in the face of a devastating illness, she was thinking of the difficulties he would endure.
Scott’s unwavering support during her battle, and his continued dedication to raising awareness, ensures that Barbara’s legacy will not be forgotten.
Through his work with Alzheimer’s Research UK, he honors her memory while striving to improve the lives of others facing similar struggles.
