Al Roker, the beloved “Today” show anchor, has been an open book when it comes to his battle with weight and food addiction.

Having undergone a gastric bypass surgery in 2002 that helped him shed 100 pounds, and later losing an additional 45 pounds in 2022,
Roker has now taken another step in his journey—releasing a cookbook aimed at helping families create meaningful memories around the dinner table.
While he has made significant lifestyle changes over the years, he remains empathetic toward those who continue to struggle with their relationship with food.

A Judgment-Free Approach to Food Addiction

In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Roker firmly stated that he would never pass judgment on anyone facing food addiction.

“I’m not gonna judge anybody. Listen, it’s unlike any other addiction or dependence. You can live without alcohol, you can live without cigarettes, whatever that drug of choice is… but you’ve got to eat, and so for some people, it’s just difficult,” he explained.
This understanding comes from personal experience. For years, Roker grappled with weight fluctuations and the emotional challenges that accompanied them.
At his heaviest, he weighed 340 pounds and wore size 54 jeans. He tried countless diets, only to regain the weight he had lost. It wasn’t until he made the life-changing decision to undergo surgery that he saw lasting results.
Support for Weight Loss Medication
With the increasing popularity of weight loss drugs like Ozempic, many celebrities and public figures have shared their opinions on the matter.
Roker, known for his practical and supportive approach to weight management, believes that each individual should choose the path that works best for them.
“If this is what works for them, who are we to say, ‘Oh, don’t do that.’ As long as it’s safe and effective, good for you. I think everybody’s journey is their journey,” he said.

His stance reflects a broader conversation about body autonomy and the evolving methods available for weight management. While he chose surgery, he acknowledges that different approaches work for different people.
Reflecting on His Transformation
Roker has never shied away from discussing his weight loss journey, frequently sharing updates and reflections with his followers. In 2022, he posted a striking Instagram update, holding up the size 54 jeans he once wore.
“Hard to believe it was 20 years ago today, I wore these size 54 Levi jeans to my #gastricbypass at 340 lbs and here I am today,” he captioned the post.
“It’s still a struggle, but I’m never going back. I have setbacks and struggle every day, but I never forget how far I’ve come.”
His honesty about the ongoing challenges of maintaining a healthy lifestyle has resonated with fans, many of whom appreciate his candidness about weight loss being a lifelong commitment.
Cooking as a Form of Connection

Beyond his weight loss journey, Roker has developed a deep appreciation for food and cooking. His new cookbook, Al Roker’s Recipes to Live By: Easy, Memory-Making Family Dishes for Every Occasion, is designed to encourage families to connect over meals.
While the book features a variety of recipes, its core message is about the importance of making lasting memories around the dinner table.
A firm believer in the power of family traditions, Roker shared that his wife, journalist Deborah Roberts, has a strict “no phones at the table” rule.
“Anyone who is dining with the Rokers must leave it [their phone] in a basket, and that’s that,” he said.
The Impact of His Weight on His Marriage
Roker has also been open about how his struggles with weight affected his marriage. In an essay for Today, he revealed that his wife was deeply concerned about his health and found it difficult to understand the nature of his addiction.

“She was upset about it, she was frustrated, she was angry. She thought, ‘Why don’t you care enough about yourself and why don’t you care about me and our relationship enough to change?’ And I said, ‘Look, it’s not about you. It’s about me,’” he wrote.
His journey highlights the emotional and relational complexities that often accompany food addiction. While he ultimately made the decision to change for himself, the support of his family played a crucial role in his transformation.
A Message of Encouragement
Through his personal experiences and public discussions, Roker continues to inspire those who struggle with food addiction and weight loss.
Whether through his words, his cookbook, or his ongoing advocacy for a balanced lifestyle, his message remains clear: everyone’s journey is unique, and no one should be judged for the path they choose.
As he looks ahead, Roker remains committed to health, happiness, and helping others find their way—one meal, one day, and one decision at a time.
