Not only are the contestants on Farmer Wants A Wife taken out of their comfort zone as they navigate life on the farm, but the leading men are often just as uncomfortable throughout the experience. After years of living solo in a remote part of Australia, the farmers suddenly have a group of women living in their house vying for their attention.
Farmer Corey tells Yahoo Lifestyle that while he’s seen every season of the reality show over the years, he “wasn’t quite prepared” for the actual experience. The 24-year-old reveals that apart from the unique living situation, the biggest surprise while filming the show was that he wasn’t able to work on the farm as often as he wanted.
“It’s that full-on with the hours of filming that you think you can get time to do a bit of farm work, like, I’ll do this here and there, but by the end of the day, it’s an intense process,” he details. “You don’t get much time, if any time at all, to do any farm work. And if you do, you just run yourself into the ground in terms of sleep and mental capacity and that.”
Farmer Thomas adds that he was surprised by the show’s “intense” production schedule and how much it impacted his day-to-day life.
“Probably the hours of filming shocked me a bit, the whole stop-start, ready at this time, and then you sit there and do nothing, or it’s flat out,” he remarks. “I thought I’d be able to do a bit of work during the day, but you don’t do that. All you do is snack all day on sugary snacks and get a bit fatter.
“End of the day, you’re so drained and tired, but you’ve got so much on your mind and you struggle to sleep.”

‘Friends for life’
In addition to forming connections with their contestants, Corey and Thomas share that the four farmers also developed “a few bromances” during filming.
“It was lucky this year it was a great group of farmers, we all became real close friends and all that,” Thomas says. “We couldn’t catch up with our normal friends because we were busy, and we would have to travel for events and all that. It’s good we all clicked and got along.”
Corey agrees he gained “friends for life” and really benefited from speaking with people going through a similar experience.
“It was good because we all clicked and gelled so well as farmers,” he adds. “You have that support network, because you can’t talk to anyone, and no one truly understands the intricacies of the show, and you’ve got people that you can relate with because they’re going through the same thing. It helps enormously having other farmers and a tight-knit group of friends.”
