Married At First Sight viewers have turned on fan favourite Carina Mirabile over a “harsh” detail in her Final Vows, where she brutally dumped her ‘husband’ Paul Antoine.
Despite Paul punching a wall and calling his on-screen wife “very judgey” and a “snob” to another bride, the couple stayed strong throughout the experiment until the final task, where Paul met his ‘backup match’.
Carina, 31, told the 30-year-old he would “regret” going on the date for the “rest of his life” as their nine-week relationship came to a crescendo on Monday evening before a backdrop of roses at their Final Vows.
Viewers afterwards took to social media to say her comment was too harsh for the circumstances.
“For the rest of your life, it was a bit harsh and grandiose,” one person wrote on Instagram.
“OMG, for the rest of his life; seriously, she’s reacting like he had an affair. Over The Top,” another person said.
“You will regret this for the rest of your life. Paul, half an hour later, [will be] swiping right on Tinder,” a third person joked.
However, other people commended Carina for ending her relationship with Paul, and many supported her, saying she deserved more from him.
“As Carina just said- love shouldn’t be that hard. I’m so glad she chose herself. It’s a strong message for us all,” one person said, while another added, “You are worth more.”
“Ghosted her. Punched a wall. Told one of her secrets. Went on a date with another woman. Bye-bye Paul. Well done, Carina,” said another person.
A fourth person said: “Carina, you are a huge role model to all young girls, actually to all women!!! Good girl, this was the right decision for your life, as we only have one.”
Carina and Paul looked every part of the TV golden couple, with the brunette Italian donning a silver embellished gown while her ‘husband’ wore a white suit as they reunited to decide if they would stay together.
According to Daily Mail Australia’s Ali Daher, some moments of the heartbreaking end to Paul and Carina’s tumultuous marriage were not aired because they were too raw and distressing to broadcast.
Carina began her vows by reminiscing about their “strong feelings” for each other, but her speech soon turned dark.
She said Paul “threw it (their relationship) all away” in the “selfish act” of meeting his backup suitor.
“You were given a test, which you failed. In my eyes, that was the final straw,” Carina said as Paul started to cry.
“The trust is broken, and I can’t come back from that.
“Paul, I was yours; you had me, and you ruined it, and now you’re going to have to live with that for the rest of your life.”
The wellness advisor froze, blinked rapidly and cried before collapsing onto a wooden bench, where he remained inconsolable for 20 minutes before producers escorted him away.
“I’m f***ing heartbroken right now. Can’t believe it’s over,” he said.
A producer asked him: “Did you have any inkling it was going to go like this today?”
“No. Literally none. I just want to go and give her the biggest hug. I feel like asking you to maybe…(get her to) try a little harder to move past it,” he said.
“I just want to convince her. I’d like to think she’s going to regret her decision.
“Part of me is still hoping she will regret the decision, and she’ll reach out and decide to continue. If she does, I’ll be here with open arms.”
