Incumbent Mayor Chris Brown defeated his opponent Third Ward Alderman Alex Clubb in the Republican Mayoral race in the Consolidated Primary Election tonight.
Brown had 1045 votes and Clubb finished with 386 votes. Brown shared his thoughts about getting reelected.
“We’re just really excited. We worked really hard. We had a great group of volunteers that pushed to get the votes out and, we’re just really thrilled.
We knew what numbers we needed I think we got to where we wanted to be, so we’re pretty happy with everything. Well I mean I think we knew the higher the vote total which we were pushing really hard the better we would be.
Now I just want to thank everybody that came out I know this wasn’t easy for a lot of people and it was kind of confusing with the Republican primary and what was going on but I appreciate everybody that came out and we got lots of good things coming.”
WCSJ also interviewed Clubb after the election.
“You know what do you do. I’m happy with the race I ran with the amount of money I had to run versus what Chris had. And you know I got around and talked to as many people as I could and I had a ton of good feedback.
And you know the votes just weren’t there. So you know we move on and it is what it is. I knew it would be tough to win because it’s always tough to beat an incumbent.
I thought that it would be at least closer I didn’t think I was going to win per se but I thought it was going to be a little bit closer than it was, but you know again it’s an election you never know what’s going to happen.
They had a good ground game with mail pieces and stuff like that and I just didn’t have the budget for that So you know I went door to door with some pieces and did what we could for the budget we had.
So it was a very grassroots campaign and like I say I’m proud of what we did and a couple of people that helped me with it and you know it is what it is. We did what we could and the results just were not there.”
Although he lost the Mayoral race, Clubb has two more years to serve as Third Ward Alderman.
“What my plan is, I’ll probably run for reelection for Alderman in two years and then probably if everything’s going alright with that probably go ahead and run again in four years for Mayor.
So I’m going to do what I can to keep them honest with everything and you know I think even with losing, it’s not bad I got a lot of stuff out in the open a lot of the crap that’s going on. So you know hopefully I can hold them honest and keep them from doing some of the things that they’re planning on doing.
I just want to thank all my supporters and people that came out to vote for me and you know like I say we’ll be running for election for Alderman in a couple of years and plan on doing it again for Mayor in four, so we’ll see how it goes.”
Meanwhile, Grundy County Clerk Kay Olson said 1,433 people voted out 9,539 registered voters in the city of Morris which equates to a 15 percent voter turnout.
Olson also said Brown will now be on the April 1st General Election ballot running unopposed as no democrats filed.
