After winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Emilia Pérez, Zoe Saldaña’s next movie will be the Pixar sci-fi movie Elio. Saldaña is voicing Aunt Olga Solis in the animated feature, which recently received a new trailer from Pixar.

Elio

Elio marks Pixar’s first original film since 2023’s Elemental, which was a rom-com about fire element Ember Lumen and water element Wade Ripple, who try to save a convenience store owned by Ember’s father, Bernie.

Elio sends Pixar back to the sci-fi genre, with a story following 11-year-old Elio, whose biggest wish is to get abducted by aliens.

Saldaña’s character was added to Elio after America Ferrera, who was originally attached as the voice of Elio’s mother, had to depart the movie due to scheduling conflicts, leading to her character being reworked into Aunt Olga.

“For centuries, people have called out to the universe looking for answers—in Disney and Pixar’s all-new feature film Elio, the universe calls back!” reads the official synopsis for the movie.

“The cosmic misadventure introduces Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking.

Mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be.”

Elio Features References to Several Horror Classics

Elio is expected to receive a PG rating from the Motion Picture Association, the rating that most Pixar movies receive if they don’t earn a G rating. While a PG rating allows for references and dialogue and visuals that would otherwise be restricted in a G-rated movie, Elio co-director Madeline Sharafian shared back in November that she wanted to “ride that line of the PG movie” by including references that audiences wouldn’t typically see in a movie with that rating.

“[Elio has] some sci-fi horror references. It’s one of our best surprises, so I don’t want to give away too much,” she teased, sharing that acclaimed horror classics like AlienClose Encounters of the Third Kind, and The Thing would be referenced.

“I’m always trying to push it to be weirder and a little creepier, to ride that line of the PG movie.”

Sharafian co-directed Elio with Domee Shi (Turning Red) and Adrian Molina (Coco). The screenplay was written by Mary Alice Drumm.

Besides Kibreab and Saldaña, the film features the voices of Remy Edgerly as Glordon, Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa, and Shirley Henderson as OOOOO, among others.
