Controversial Married At First Sight bride Jacqui Burfoot’s family has broken their silence on why they refused to attend her televised ‘wedding’, and revealed what their daughter is really like.

Married at First Sight bride Jacqui Burfoot’s father has revealed why her family did not attend the controversial Kiwi’s ‘wedding’ to Ryan Donnelly.

Doog Burfoot spoke to The New Zealand Herald on Tuesday, revealing Jacqui had asked her family to attend the nuptials.

However, Doog said he, his wife Michelle (Jacqui’s mother), and her younger siblings Megan and Scott all declined the invitation.

He said the family also did not appear elsewhere throughout the show because they believed Jacqui, 30, was out to seek “fame” and “fortune”.

“Jacqui did talk to her mum and me about going on the show. We weren’t overly happy, but we knew she would die wondering if she didn’t,” Doog said.

“Her reason, we think, was probably for opportunity…to go through the door to see what’s there: love, fame, fortune, or just the adventure of the unknown and the discovery of new doors to open.”

Viewers have accused Jacqui of being a “golddigger” and “loopy”, with fans lambasting her for “fake crying” about mundane details like having a television in the couple’s bedroom.

However, Doog said his daughter’s edit on the show amounted to a highly fictional and “twisted avatar” of the real person.

He said the family did not even recognise Jacqui on their screen, accusing the producers of using the notorious reality TV tactic of “frankenbiting” to splice together different answers to questions.

Doog said the result was a compilation of “the bad one per cent” of his daughter’s responses, which was used to spin a narrative that the former lawyer was essentially “crazy”.

He used the example of Jacqui saying, “There’s no one on my level,” claiming the comment was actually made about others’ work ethics at his daughter’s previous employer.

Jacqui’s father said the producers twisted it to sound like a general statement, creating a “persona of extreme vanity”.

The comment seemingly formed the Kiwi’s entire character arc, which saw Jacqui write multiple negative lists about Ryan before changing them to positive ones after the Campbelltown-based groom wrote leave at the final Commitment Ceremony.

Jacqui and Ryan called time on their tumultuous nine-week relationship at Final Vows.

She and groom Clint Rice subsequently got engaged at So Dramatic’s season 12 finale viewing party at Arcade Bar in Sydney last Sunday.

To the shock of their present cast and fans watching, Clint got down on one knee about four months into their whirlwind relationship to present Jacqui with a $30,000 5-carat ring from Simon Curwood Jewellers.

The professional golfer and former lawyer allegedly fell in love trekking the countryside, meeting each other’s families and living at the professional golfer’s million-dollar home near Launceston.

Doog confirmed Clint stayed with the family in Queenstown for a week and praised the entrepreneur for his intelligent and fun nature, claiming his daughter was well-suited to the Tasmanian local.
