It’s no surprise that most of the leading men on Farmer Wants A Wife feel uncomfortable while filming the reality show. Not only is it often their first time being in front of a camera, but they also go from living solo to suddenly having a group of women on their farm vying for their attention.
Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle ahead of Monday night’s premiere, 35-year-old South Australian farmer Thomas admits the housing situation was one of the biggest challenges for him on the show. In fact, he describes it as a “nightmare” dating five women at once and having them all under the same roof.
“A few mates were like, ‘Oh, it would be your dream having five girls in your house’, but it was a bit of a nightmare,” he remarks. “Not bad for them, just their feelings. You don’t want to manipulate them or play with their feelings, and I guess that’s one of the hardest things.
“You couldn’t really be 100 per cent honest with them and tell them how you’re feeling, because they’d probably talk to the other girls. I’m a pretty honest and open person, probably too honest, and I found that pretty hard.”
24-year-old Queensland farmer Corey adds that he didn’t want to hurt any of his contestants on the show, which became more difficult as filming went on.
“You know in your gut where you’re leaning and you know who you’re most interested in, but you can’t say anything. It’s a challenge in itself to do that.”
‘That’s what I struggled with’
The first episode of Farmer Wants A Wife will feature 32 ladies taking part in a series of speed dates in the Hunter Valley, before the farmers each choose their top five to invite back to their farm. Thomas shares that even with a smaller pool of women to connect with, he initially struggled to get to know each of them individually because of the unique environment they were in.
“You’d have those private moments talking and getting to know someone, and another girl would come in and interrupt that,” he recalls. “I got a bit annoyed with that, and you couldn’t catch up on that conversation for another day or two.
“I found that probably one of the hardest things to really connect. Someone would interrupt when you were talking, and that’s what I struggled with.”
Corey agrees it was a “challenge” trying to give each contestant an equal chance and get to know them on a deeper level.
“They’ve sacrificed a lot to be there for the risk of finding love, and you don’t want to break anyone’s hearts at the end of the day, but it’s inevitable. And you always fear that you may get your own heart broken at the end of the day as well,” he says.
“There’s really a lot playing on your mind through the whole process of it.”
Farmer Wants A Wife premieres Monday, 21 April at 7:30pm on Channel Seven and 7plus
